Steam Cleaning Wine Barrels
Oak barrels are one of the biggest investments a winery.
- Add longevity to your oak barrels
- Rehydrate and revitalize the Oak
- Remove left over bitter tannins and melt tartrates
Oak barrels are one of the biggest investments a winery will make, the use of the Duplex cleaning system will effectively treat and take care of the barrels increasing the longevity of the Oak, lengthening the use a winery can get out of their barrels, saving you thousands of dollars per year.
The elevated temperature of the steam allows for a much faster cleaning process of the barrels, melting the tartrates in a fraction of the time than it takes with hot water, all while resulting in massive savings in water consumption. The vapor property of dry steam allows for the pores of the wood to be opened, releasing not only tartrates but also old wine and bitter tannins that have been absorbed inside the wood. The whole process revitalizes the wood barrels while being safe on the char of the oak.
The added benefits beyond cleaning are the powerful ability to rehydrate the oak barrels during storage and also the cleaning process creates a natural vacuum on the barrel, after inserting a bung into the hole you will be able to quickly test the barrel for leaks.
Duplex Cleaning Machines have an exclusive range of industrial strength steam cleaners, floor scrubbers and vacuums that are ideal for improving cleaning standards in winery production areas and cellar doors.
The Duplex range of industrial steam cleaners (Steambox / JetVac) range are especially ideal for use in wine production areas. Producing superheated 94% dry steam at up to 190°C under 6-10 Bar pressure, Duplex steamers can hygienically clean a large variety of equipment in very short times with little water and no chemicals.

FAST & EFFICIENT The combined 40 litre water capacity tank allow continuous use.
EASY & SIMPLE The process only takes 15 minutes of time once a minimum temperature of over 100ºC is reached. The whole process is done without a single chemical, meaning no wastewater to treat.
EFFECTIVE IN REMOVING TARTRATES AND TANNINS Steam machines can effectively and efficiently remove left over bitter tannins and melt tartrates in old barrels. The added benefits beyond cleaning are the powerful ability to rehydrate the oak barrels during storage and also the cleaning process creates a natural vacuum on the barrel, after inserting a bung into the hole, the leaks in barrels can be quickly tested.

Applications for Wine Barrel and Bottling Lines Cleaning:

|
|
Wine Barrels
Wine barrels can be thermally disinfected with +100°C steam in minutes. First, after decanting rinse with high pressure water, secondly insert the Barrel Steam Diffuser inside the barrel until internal temperature reaches 100°C and finally rinse wine barrels again with cold water.

Bottling Lines
Bottling lines of 700 to 1200 bottles per hour can be cleaned and thermally sanitised with +100°C dry steam. First, use the Bacchus hose to connect the steamer to the bottling line, then steam cleaning occurs through up to 6 bar pressure and sterilisation via +100°C termperatures..

Equipments
After only 15 minutes of cleaning, the equipment is completely sterilized without the use of caustic or other harsh chemicals, greatly reducing water consumption wastewater treatment.

How to clean wine barrels:
Cleaning of wine barrels has traditionally required lots of water, cleaning agents and time to complete. Given that many wineries clean thousands of barrels multiple times per year this can be a monsterous task. Thankfully Tecnovap has come up with a better, faster and easier way to not only clean, but also to detartrate and disinfect wine barrels. This is through the use of superheated dry steam.
Tecnovap steamers use +165c-190c superheated 94% dry steam to clean, disfect and break down tartrates in wine barrels. With a Tecnovap Bacchus system a wine barrel can be cleaned and sanitised with internal temperatures of +100c in under 5 minutes, all with less than 3 litres of water.
- First, drain the barrel of any wine residues to allow steam to penetrate all areas;
- Turn barrel so plug hole is facing up and insert the Bacchus steam diffuser;
- Turn on the steam and insert a thermometer;
- Wait and watch as the temperature climbs up to +100c in minutes. When temperature climbs the steam actively breaks down tartrates and wine scale.
- To finish, simply turn the barrel to drain residue and allow to cool.
Steam works well at breaking down the tartrates in barrel which helps expose the oak and also allows steam to destroy any bretanomyces in the oak. The operation is simple, saves approximately 100Lt of water per barrel, does not require the use of a flame, does not require any chemicals and most importantly can help bring back the oak flavour.
